What Is Semen?
Semen is a white or grey liquid which emits from the urethra on a man
ejaculation process (urethra is a tube in the
human penis).
Usually, each milliliter of human
semen contains millions of spermatozoa (sperm), but the majority of the
sperm count consists of secretions of the glands in the male reproductive organs.
The main purpose of semen is purely for reproduction, as a vehicle to carry the spermatozoa into the female reproductive tract through sexual intercourse. Although erection and orgasm are controlled by separate mechanisms, but ejaculation of semen accompanies orgasm and sexual pleasure too and semen emission is an essential factor for enjoyable sex in most people.
What Is Normal Semen Volume?
Semen in human is usually white or grey, but it can occasionally appear as yellowish too. Pink or red semen suggests that blood is present. Although this is only rarely due to a serious health problem, men with semen that seems bloodstained should seek advice from their family doctor.
Semen clots almost immediately after a man ejaculates, forming a sticky and jelly like liquid. Semen will liquefy again in 5 to 40 minutes. It is quite normal for semen to form jelly like globules and this does not indicate any health or fertility problem. Failure of clotting and subsequent liquefaction can cause fertility problems in men.
The average count of semen produced at ejaculation is 2 to 5 milliliter. The semen
counts consistently less than 1.5 milliliter (hypospermia) or more than 5.5 milli litre (hyperspermia) are probably abnormal. Lower sperm volumes may occur after very frequent ejaculation and higher volumes are seen after prolonged abstinence.
The World Health Organization provides a definition of a normal sperm count as follow:
- The concentration of spermatozoa should be at least 20 million per milliliter.
- The total volume of semen should be at least 2 milliliter.
- The total number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate should be at least 40 million.
- At least 75 percent of the spermatozoa should be alive (it is normal for up to 25 percent to be dead).
- At least 30 percent of the spermatozoa should be of normal shape and form.
- At least 25 percent of the spermatozoa should be swimming with rapid forward movement.
- At least 50 percent of the spermatozoa should be swimming forward, even if only sluggishly.
It is quite surprising how many abnormal and dead sperm can be present in a normal sample.
Measuring human sperm count is a very technical business and results can be affected by many factors, including the length of time between ejaculation and semen sample lab analysis, and how the sample is kept when being transported to the lab.
There can be enormous variation in sperm count in an individual, even over a few days. It is important that at least two, preferably three or more, samples are analyzed, each at least two to three weeks apart. A single sample is inadequate to assess male semen quality.
Sperm count is only an indication of fertilizing capacity and a normal count does not guarantee success. The lower semen count causes fertility in men.
How To Increase
Sperm Volume?
As a man age goes up or because of some other reasons, most of men have lower than
normal semen volume when they
ejaculate. As mentioned above, the lower count of sperms causes
fertility in men, besides, semen emission is an essential factor for enjoyable sex in most men. For most of men the higher semen volume emitting at ejaculation, gives them more sexual pleasure. Most of women like a man who ejaculates more semen!
